I've seen hundreds of people posting with the same problem for well over a year. I did't have much luck with Ubuntu I have tried all of the tricks to make it work but nothing positive - toshutils doesn't run, I have the latest BIOS, k10tmep installed, you name it…I am just too fed up installing the stable 8. There is a very lame solution for the fan problem, start Ubuntu fan will not work, use it for a few minutes, restart it then in the boot mode - prior to grub load - the fan will start cooling the cpu, then grub loads in, you choose your Ubuntu and voila, the fan will work, but it won't stop.

Biggest issue to date is that the fans are not working as expected. They don't turn on when needed which has caused the laptop to overheat and stop running. I understand it's because of the InsydeH2O bios. Other ACPI things seem to work perfectly. I would not recommend this laptop with this bios to anyone looking to run linux because of this issue. I'm happy to report, all is working as intended. My fan worked fine on 9. Have tried various acpi settings. Would recommend sticking with 9. As an alternative 7. There are workarounds but I haven't got wifi to work as of yet. Acceleration in 3D works but has high flicker especially when running full screen. Compiz however is excellent. Webcam works with the chicony driver. Ethernet is working with no problems. USB works as expected. Both 32 and 64 bit versions of ubuntu run fine. Expresscard untested as I don't have anything to test it with.
On the whole I am fairly happy to recommend running hardy or intrepid on this laptop. Main problem now is getting wifi working. But this applies to everyone using the rtlb driver using the id.
